Rotterdam, NL

In addition to providing sustainable warmth to the local residents, the Waterhub also creates a one of a kind public space at the head of a new public boulevard and becomes a new landmark for South Rotterdam.

Iconic context

The history and development of Rotterdam Port can be read in the buildings along the Maas; the Waterhub becomes the new icon for sustainability in this series.

A public machine

The Waterhub is clad in a black steel mesh through which the outline of the pump building and water tank can just be made out. The inner workings of the machine are revealed through an open corner along the main street.

A public experience

Everywhere on the harbour and the new public boulevard the output of this machine is to be seen and experienced in the form of a 16 meter high waterfall.
